I Don’t Even Feel Like Touching You”: New Mother Shares Heartbreak After Body-Shaming by Husband Post-Delivery

During pregnancy, weight gain is completely normal, yet many women face criticism for it. Sadly, this criticism often comes not from strangers, but from their own spouses. Sonia Gupta experienced this painful reality firsthand.

“I always believed love is about the heart, not the body. You love a person for their soul, not their appearance. If that were truly the case, what happened to me wouldn’t have happened,” Sonia recalls.

Just one month after giving birth to her daughter, Sonia’s husband, who once called her “the most beautiful woman in my life,” began making hurtful remarks about her appearance. “After seeing me, I don’t even feel like touching you,” he reportedly said. Comments about her swollen cheeks, changes in her waistline, and other aspects of her body left invisible but deep emotional wounds. Sonia admits that at times she questioned whether marrying him had been a mistake.

Life Revolves Around the Baby
During this time, Sonia’s world had shrunk to caring for her newborn. Days and nights blurred together. She hardly had time to eat, think about her appearance, or take care of herself, as her focus was entirely on her daughter.

Struggling to Care for Herself
The postpartum period made self-care nearly impossible. Pregnancy had increased her weight, and breastfeeding further altered her body. With no support system at home, Sonia found it difficult to carve out any time for herself.

Husband’s Cutting Remarks
Her husband’s comments intensified over time: “Look at your cheeks, your waist… why don’t you take care of yourself? Other wives in the office have lost weight so quickly!” Initially, Sonia tried to see his remarks as advice, but they soon became a constant source of pain.

Breaking Point
One day, the verbal attacks crossed a line. “Sonia, honestly… I don’t even feel like touching you anymore. Have you looked in the mirror? Your breasts have grown—absolutely ugly!” Sonia describes the sting of these words as a sharp arrow piercing through her heart. That day, she realized she had perhaps made a mistake by marrying him.

Finding Strength
With a friend’s advice, Sonia began to reclaim small moments for herself—light walks and relaxation yoga—to soothe her mind and body. “I did this not to look slim for him, but to feel peaceful and strong enough to care for my daughter,” she explains.

Living Life on Her Own Terms
Sonia has now decided to live life on her own terms. She plans to focus on her health gradually while raising her daughter, and she no longer lets her husband’s hurtful words affect her. “I will care for myself, grow stronger mentally, and prioritize my well-being,” she affirms.
