In a recent incident at a hospital, a husband could not handle the sight of his wife writhing in labor pain and stepped out of the delivery room. The incident highlights how intense labor pain can be, not just for the mother but also emotionally challenging for the family.
Renowned gynecologist Dr. Shafali Dadheech shared the incident on her Instagram page, emphasizing the importance of emotional support from partners during childbirth.
When the husband tried to leave, Dr. Dadheech called out, “Where are you going? Your wife is calling for you; she is in labor pain.”
The husband replied, “Ma’am, I can’t stay inside. Please call my mother or my mother-in-law instead.” Dr. Dadheech reminded him, “She needs you right now.” The husband admitted, “I can’t watch the bleeding. I’m feeling faint and need glucose.”
Dr. Dadheech explained that while the mother experiences physical pain and bleeding, the partner’s support is crucial. Even holding her hand for a couple of minutes can provide immense emotional comfort during labor.
She further emphasized that pregnancy and labor are physically and mentally taxing for women. Symptoms such as nausea, body aches, or mood swings are often dismissed as “drama,” but they are real challenges that need empathy and care from their partners.
“During labor, it is often suggested that only the mother-in-law or other female relatives accompany the mother,” Dr. Dadheech said. “But as an expecting father, you can and should stand by your wife during this critical time. A few words of encouragement, a gentle touch, and emotional support can make a world of difference.”
