
The health and growth of your plants do not depend on how expensive they are, but on the quality of soil in which they are planted. Gardening expert Vidushi Malik, popularly known as Alpha Vatika on social media, shares the right way to prepare a potting soil mix that will ensure your plants thrive and bloom beautifully.
The Secret Lies in the Soil

Many plant enthusiasts struggle with preparing soil for potted plants. Simply mixing garden soil with compost can make pots heavy and retain too much water, causing roots to rot. Vidushi Malik recommends a balanced mix of garden soil, vermicompost, cocopeat, and sand. While compost provides nutrients, cocopeat retains moisture, and sand ensures proper aeration. The result: healthy, flourishing plants with abundant flowers and buds.
Step 1: Base with Garden Soil
The foundation of any potting mix is garden soil. For a mix sufficient for 10 pots, start with 4 parts regular garden soil. If the soil is too compact or wet, spread it under the sun to dry slightly and break clumps into fine particles. This provides a stable base to anchor plant roots.
Step 2: Add Nutrients with Compost
Plants need nitrogen and micronutrients to bloom. Add 3 parts vermicompost or well-decomposed cow dung to the mix. Ensure the cow dung is at least one year old to avoid burning the roots. Vermicompost is a safe, nutrient-rich option that enhances soil fertility.
Step 3: Retain Moisture with Cocopeat
Cocopeat, derived from coconut husks, holds several times its weight in water. Add 2 parts cocopeat to keep the soil light and maintain moisture around plant roots, reducing the frequency of watering.
Step 4: Ensure Drainage with Sand
To prevent waterlogging—which is a major reason for plant failure—add 1 part sand. Sand makes the soil porous, allowing roots to spread freely and receive adequate oxygen.
Step 5: Protect with Neem Cake and Fungicide
To safeguard plants from harmful fungi and pests, add a small amount of neem cake and fungicide powder. Neem cake acts as a natural fertilizer while neutralizing harmful bacteria in the soil. Fungicide protects plants from fungal infections, especially during heavy rains or overwatering.
Step 6: Mix Thoroughly
Combine all the elements—4 parts soil, 3 parts compost, 2 parts cocopeat, and 1 part sand—on the ground using a spade or trowel. Mix thoroughly until the compost and cocopeat are evenly distributed. For best results, let the prepared soil sit in sunlight for a day before filling your pots.
