Growing a clove plant at home may sound challenging, but a popular Gardening Guru has shared a unique and highly effective “lemon technique” that helps cloves sprout faster and prevents them from rotting. With the right soil mix and proper care, you can successfully grow a healthy clove plant in a pot.
Why Grow Cloves at Home?
Clove is not only a fragrant spice but also an interesting plant to grow. Traditionally, clove seeds have a low germination rate, but the lemon method significantly improves the chances of sprouting by creating the right level of moisture and acidity.
Step 1: Choose Fresh, High-Quality Cloves
The first step is selecting fresh cloves, not dry or old ones. Fresh cloves contain more essential oils, which increases germination success.
- Pick 10–15 premium cloves with their “flower bud” intact.
- Soak them in clean water for 2–3 hours.
This softens the outer layer and prepares them for sprouting.
Step 2: The Lemon Trick – Boosts Germination Naturally
This special technique helps cloves stay moist, prevents fungus, and speeds up sprouting.
- Take the soaked cloves out of the water.
- Slice a fresh lemon into two pieces.
- Insert 6–8 cloves into one lemon slice so that part of the clove rests inside the pulp.
The lemon juice creates a mildly acidic environment that protects the cloves from rotting and allows steady moisture — ideal for germination.
Step 3: Prepare Nutrient-Rich Potting Soil
Clove plants grow best in light, airy, nutrient-rich soil. For the potting mix, combine:
- Vermicompost – to provide nutrition
- Neem cake – to protect from pests and fungal attack
- Cocopeat – to maintain moisture and keep the soil loose
This mixture ensures faster growth and a healthier plant.
Step 4: Planting the Cloves
- Fill a pot with the prepared soil.
- Place the lemon slice containing the cloves just below the surface.
- Cover with a thin layer of soil.
- Water lightly — the soil should remain slightly moist, not wet, as excess water can rot the cloves.
Step 5: Right Placement and Care
For healthy growth:
- Place the pot in a spot with bright light but no harsh direct sunlight.
- Keep the soil moist but avoid overwatering.
- Water only when the top layer appears dry.
With the lemon method, the cloves remain protected and generally sprout within a few weeks.
