“Girls Can Achieve Great Success If Given Freedom to Choose Their Careers,” Says HR Professional Ramya Raghunath

Ramya Raghunath, a 25-year-old HR professional, knows exactly what she wants from life. Balancing modern perspectives with a deep connection to her culture and traditions, Ramya shares her insights in the ‘Gen Z Talks’ series.

Freedom to Dream
“I consider myself lucky to have been given the freedom to dream big without boundaries,” says Ramya. “My parents encouraged me, gave me wings to fly, and allowed me to make my own choices—whether in education or career. They never imposed their decisions on me. By the time I grew up, the internet connected me to the world, giving me access to every bit of knowledge I could imagine.”

More Fortunate Than My Mother
Ramya reflects on her mother’s experience: “My mother did not have the same freedom I enjoy. She grew up in a time when career opportunities for girls were very limited. Her dreams were confined within societal expectations. Responsibilities of marriage and family were imposed early. Today, we are fortunate—our parents guide us but do not pressure us, giving us the courage to make our own decisions.”

Guidance Matters Despite Freedom
“Gen Z has access to endless information, freedom to express themselves, and the liberty to take decisions. Yet, too much exposure can sometimes mislead. Youth often struggle to discern what is truly right for them. In such times, parental guidance becomes crucial. True power comes from being honest and authentic with oneself, which leads to real growth,” she adds.

Power Lies in Growing Together
Ramya believes success is not just about individual progress. “When we move forward alone, our reach is limited. But when we grow together, including family and friends, success becomes long-lasting and meaningful. Facing challenges head-on and uplifting others along the way is the true measure of courage. I want to advance with my family and friends, not leave them behind.”

Ending Gender Bias at Home
“Girls’ paths are still not easy. Many homes still treat sons and daughters differently. Changing this mindset is crucial. Talented girls often miss opportunities simply because of gender bias, which diminishes their confidence. Parents must empower their daughters, teach them new skills, and broaden their knowledge. This boosts self-confidence and enables them to achieve great success,” Ramya concludes.
