Actress Girija Oak has become an overnight sensation, earning the title of “National Crush” thanks to her viral video podcast series. Her elegant sari looks, particularly the recent blue sari, have captured social media attention, sparking admiration from fans across the country. In an exclusive conversation, Girija spoke about her journey, personal life, and experiences in the spotlight.
A Childhood Steeped in Art
Girija Oak, known for films like Taare Zameen Par, Shor in the City, and Jawan, as well as the web series Perfect Family, began her acting journey in theater. Born to Marathi actor Girish Oak and a pharmacist mother, Girija grew up in a home filled with creativity. Her father, initially trained in medicine, shifted to acting and became a popular stage actor even before Girija was born. Despite her artistic surroundings, her mother ensured a normal upbringing, emphasizing academics and grounded values.
Discovering Acting and Devotion to the Craft
Although Girija studied biotechnology and briefly pursued an MBA, she realized early on that acting was her true calling. “Art requires dedication. Without investing time, you cannot achieve excellence,” she explains. She began acting in commercials at age 12-13, balancing school and theater, and landed her first film role in Taare Zameen Par during her second year of graduation.
A Love for Saris
Girija’s fondness for saris began in childhood, inspired by watching her mother dress for work. “A sari is such a versatile outfit—it makes anyone look elegant, no matter their body type,” she says. With a personal collection of around 400 saris, Girija fondly recalls buying her first expensive sari with her own earnings. Her blue sari in the recent video podcast earned widespread praise, reinforcing her sartorial appeal.
Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword
Social media has been a major factor in Girija’s popularity but comes with its challenges. AI-morphed images of her have circulated online, prompting mixed reactions. “I shared a video noting that my 12-year-old son might be uncomfortable seeing such images in the future. I was trolled for this,” she reveals, highlighting the complexities of digital fame.
Personal Life and Family Reflections
Girija shares that her parents separated when she was 19, reflecting on how delayed separation affected her perception of relationships. “Children sense the distance between parents, even if adults try to shield them,” she observes. Girija feels fortunate in love; her marriage to Suhrid Godbole was marked by mutual understanding and early commitment. She notes, “Our son witnesses healthy expressions of love between us, which I hope will guide him in his future relationships.”
Girija Oak’s journey reflects a blend of talent, dedication, and grace—both on screen and in life. From her early theater days to viral fame and sartorial elegance, she continues to captivate audiences, proving that authenticity and hard work leave a lasting impression.
