From Mughal Royalty to Hollywood: How the Taj Mahal Diamond Necklace Reached Margot Robbie

Australian actress and producer Margot Robbie recently made headlines when she wore a stunning necklace with a fascinating history. The piece, called the Taj Mahal Diamond Necklace, has deep ties to India, and here’s how it made its way to the Hollywood star.

Who is Margot Robbie?
Margot Robbie, 35, is a celebrated Australian actress and producer known for blockbuster films including Barbie (2023). Alongside her acting, she is admired for her impeccable fashion sense, which made the necklace a viral sensation during the promotion of her upcoming film Wuthering Heights.

The Necklace and Its History
The heart-shaped Taj Mahal Diamond Necklace originally belonged to Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, gifted to her by her husband on her 40th birthday. Crafted with jade (known as Haritashm), diamonds, and rubies, the necklace is engraved in Persian with the words “Love is Everlasting.” Its exquisite design and storied past make it a truly priceless piece.

The Indian Connection
The necklace draws inspiration from India’s Mughal era. It was first gifted by Emperor Jahangir to his queen Nur Jahan, later passed on to Shah Jahan, who presented it to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Following her death, the Taj Mahal was built, and the necklace’s design commemorates this legendary love story. Cartier eventually acquired it for their collection.

Value and Glamour
The necklace is valued at $8 million (approximately ₹74 crore) due to its design and historical significance. Margot Robbie paired it with a strapless gown featuring a three-tone design, complementing diamond earrings, and creating a perfect red carpet look that highlighted both elegance and history.
