As biting winter cold turns tap water into an icy ordeal, households across North India are struggling with freezing water tanks and soaring electricity bills. While geysers and heaters offer some relief, extremely cold tank water often increases power consumption and heating time. Market-available insulation jackets for water tanks exist, but their high prices deter many families.
In this situation, popular YouTuber Sharmila has shared a simple yet effective “free desi hack” that helps keep water tanks warm using discarded household materials. Her idea is gaining attention for its practicality, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.
Turning Waste into Warmth
According to Sharmila, thin foam sheets found inside new clothing packages—usually thrown away as waste—can be repurposed as excellent insulation material. Foam naturally resists temperature transfer, preventing external cold air from chilling the water inside the tank while retaining internal warmth.
By layering this foam between old clothes, unused fabric pieces, or worn-out bedsheets, a padded insulation cover can be created at no cost.
How the Cover Is Made
The process is simple:
- Place a foam sheet between two layers of cloth, forming a sandwich-like structure.
- Stitch all four sides securely, adding extra stitches in the middle to prevent the foam from shifting.
- For durability, finish the edges with cloth piping to avoid fraying and extend the life of the cover.
The result is a thick, quilt-like insulation sheet comparable to expensive market jackets.
Right Size, Better Results
Sharmila emphasizes accurate measurement of the tank’s height and circumference before stitching the cover. Importantly, she advises making a separate circular cover for the tank lid, as an uncovered lid allows maximum cold to enter.
Once ready, the cover can be wrapped around the tank and secured with rope or Velcro.
Benefits of the Free Hack
- Prevents tank water from becoming extremely cold
- Helps geysers work faster, saving electricity
- Uses only old, unused household items
- Environment-friendly and cost-free
The insulation cover absorbs daytime warmth and protects the tank from icy night winds, ensuring water remains at a moderate temperature even in the early morning.
This innovative DIY solution proves that sometimes, the smartest solutions don’t come from the market—but from creativity at home.
