Winter often brings common hair problems, and dandruff is one of the most persistent issues during the cold months. While many rely on anti-dandruff shampoos, their effects are often short-lived, leaving flakes on shoulders just a day or two after washing. Excessive scratching due to itchiness can also lead to scalp wounds.
When chemical-based products fail, Ayurveda offers safe and effective alternatives. Dr. Hansaji Yogendra recommends simple, natural remedies that cleanse the scalp thoroughly and reduce itchiness without harming hair health.
Neem (Azadirachta indica)
Neem leaves, known in Ayurveda as “Sarva Rog Nivarini”, have antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. Boil neem leaves in water and use this water to wash your hair. For added effectiveness, make a paste by mixing neem leaves with yogurt and apply it to the scalp. Leave it for 15–20 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
Fenugreek (Methi) Seeds
Fenugreek seeds are highly effective in controlling dandruff buildup. Soak the seeds overnight and grind them into a paste. Mix the paste with yogurt and one teaspoon of Triphala powder. Apply this mask on the scalp for one hour and then wash with a mild shampoo.
Consistency is Key
Dr. Hansaji emphasizes that to truly reduce dandruff, these remedies must be followed consistently. Occasional use will not yield long-term results. Regular application ensures clean roots and a noticeable reduction in flakes and itchiness.
