Coconuts are widely used in Indian households, from religious rituals to cooking delicious dishes. Often, stored coconuts develop a white fungus layer or their color changes, leading people to assume they are spoiled and discard them. However, Vanisha from “Kitchen Magic” has shared an ingenious method to clean and restore old coconuts, making them look and feel as good as new while saving money.
Cleaning Method Using Baking Soda and Warm Water
To start, take a bowl and add a tablespoon of baking soda to warm water, stirring well until dissolved. Baking soda acts as a natural cleanser, effectively removing fungus and bacteria from the coconut’s surface.
Wipe Carefully
Take a clean kitchen towel or cotton cloth and dip it into the warm baking soda solution. Gently rub the coconut’s surface, focusing on areas with visible fungus. Caution: The water is hot, so handle carefully. The combination of heat and baking soda ensures that harmful elements are removed.
Don’t Worry About Color Change
While cleaning, the coconut’s color may temporarily change. Vanisha explains that this is normal and does not mean the coconut is spoiled. The key is to remove the entire fungal layer; once done, the coconut is safe for use.
Dry Thoroughly
After cleaning, don’t leave the coconut wet. Take a dry cloth and wipe it completely. Moisture is the main reason fungus reappears, so ensuring the coconut is fully dry helps maintain its freshness. Once dried, the coconut starts regaining its natural shine.
Finishing Touch With Ghee
To give the coconut a new-like appearance and protect it from moisture, apply a thin layer of pure ghee over the surface. Ghee acts as a protective shield, keeping the coconut fresh, glossy, and market-ready.
Storage Tip
If you have leftover coconut, store it in an airtight container. Cut it into pieces and pack it inside the container. Properly stored, the coconut can remain fresh for up to a year.
This simple method ensures that you never have to waste a coconut again, while maintaining hygiene and saving money.
