Many parents struggle when their children throw tantrums to get their way. From loud crying and screaming to throwing things or lying on the floor, such behavior can be challenging to manage. While parents often try to reason with their child, certain common mistakes can actually reinforce these tantrums. Parenting coach Renu Girdhar explains the five key errors that can escalate a child’s stubbornness.
1. Over-Explaining During a Tantrum
When a child is being stubborn or having a tantrum, repeatedly explaining or reasoning with them can backfire. It gives the child excessive attention, which may reinforce the behavior instead of calming it.
2. Ignoring Your Child’s Emotions
Failing to recognize and validate a child’s feelings is another common mistake. If parents do not understand what the child is experiencing emotionally, they are less equipped to manage the tantrum effectively, often leading to increased defiance.
3. Yelling or Scolding the Child
Reacting with anger or shouting can make a child suppress emotions, which may result in more intense tantrums later. Children respond better to calm guidance rather than raised voices.
4. Giving In to the Tantrum
One of the most critical errors is caving in to a child’s demands out of frustration. If a child learns that tantrums lead to getting what they want, it reinforces stubborn behavior. Consistency is key to teaching healthy boundaries.
5. Labeling the Child as “Stubborn”
Calling a child “stubborn” repeatedly or saying things like, “My child is so stubborn” in front of others can shape their self-perception. The child may begin to internalize this label and continue acting accordingly.
Takeaway for Parents
Managing tantrums requires patience, understanding, and consistent strategies. Recognizing these common mistakes can help parents guide their children effectively, reducing tantrums and building a healthier parent-child relationship.
