MD dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth has shared four easy yet effective tips to strengthen nails and prevent them from breaking prematurely. According to her, proper nail care and timely attention can significantly improve nail health.
Why Do Nails Break Easily?
Dr Panth explains that brittle or slow-growing nails are often associated with a lack of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, and biotin. Additionally, repeated contact with water, detergents, and cleaning chemicals weakens the nail structure over time. As age increases, nail growth naturally slows down, making nails more prone to damage.
Do Not Damage the Cuticles
One of the most common mistakes people make during manicures is pushing back or cutting the cuticles. Dr Panth advises against this practice, as cuticles act as a natural barrier protecting nails from external elements.
Damaged cuticles can allow harmful substances such as water, food particles, bacteria, and irritants to enter the body, increasing the risk of infections and nail damage.
Keep Nails Short and Simple
According to Dr Aanchal, keeping nails short helps prevent thinning and breakage. If you wish to grow them, increase the length gradually and maintain a straight shape. Avoid excessively curved or rounded nail shapes, as they are more likely to chip and crack.
Oil Massage for Cuticles
Regular oil massage plays an important role in nail care. Applying a few drops of oil to the cuticles and gently massaging them improves hydration and strengthens nails.
Dr Panth recommends using:
- Coconut oil
- Almond oil
- Argan oil
These oils nourish the cuticles and improve nail flexibility.
Consider Supplements—With Medical Advice
For people experiencing severe brittleness or nails breaking from the middle, supplements may help. Dr Aanchal suggests nutrients such as iron, zinc, and biotin can support nail strength.
However, she strongly warns against self-medication. Supplements should only be taken after consulting an experienced doctor, as unnecessary intake can negatively impact overall health.
