DIY Pest Control: Protect Your Plants Naturally with Lemon and Chili Spray

For gardening enthusiasts, pests are one of the biggest challenges that can harm plants and diminish their aesthetic appeal. While chemical pesticides are widely available, they can be expensive and environmentally harmful. However, there’s a simple, cost-free alternative using common kitchen ingredients—lemon and chili. Gardening experts reveal how you can make a natural insect repellent at home.

Ingredients for the Natural Pesticide:

  • 1 lemon
  • 6–7 chilies
  • A few cloves of garlic (optional)
  • A plastic or glass bottle

Even spoiled or overripe lemons and chilies can be used, making this method sustainable and zero-cost.

Why Lemon and Chili Work

Lemon’s acidic nature and the heat of chili create a solution that pests cannot tolerate. This natural combination helps keep insects away while being safe for plants, humans, and the environment.

How to Make the Spray

  1. Chop the lemons and chilies into small pieces and place them in a plastic or glass bottle.
  2. Optional: Add chopped garlic cloves for additional pest-repelling properties.
  3. Fill the bottle with water, leaving some space at the top.
  4. Seal the bottle and let the mixture sit for 4–5 hours or overnight. During this time, the water absorbs the essence of the lemon and chili, turning slightly yellow and developing a strong scent that deters pests.

How to Use

  1. Strain the liquid and dilute it with water in a 1:3 ratio (one part extract to three parts water).
  2. Spray the solution on your plants either early in the morning or after sunset to prevent leaf burn from direct sunlight.
  3. Ensure thorough coverage, especially the undersides of leaves where pests often hide.
  4. Apply once a week for consistent protection and to prevent pests from returning.

This easy, eco-friendly method not only keeps your plants healthy but also reduces kitchen waste, offering a sustainable solution for garden care.
