Fatty liver is not a minor condition—it can severely affect your body’s overall health. While a blood test or ultrasound is the standard method for diagnosis, it is possible to get an early indication at home using three simple, scientifically backed tests. Dr. Salim Zaidi shares easy ways to check for fatty liver without any machines.
1. Waist Measurement Test
For men, a waist size over 90 cm (35 inches) and for women over 80 cm (31.5 inches) indicates an increased risk of visceral fat, which is directly linked to liver fat accumulation. A larger waist circumference often signals a higher likelihood of fatty liver.
2. Waist-to-Height Ratio
Measure your waist and height in centimeters, then divide waist size by height. If the ratio exceeds 0.5, it suggests a high risk of fatty liver. For example, a waist of 96 cm and height of 170 cm gives a ratio of 0.56, indicating elevated risk.
3. Belly Shape Test
Observe your abdominal shape. A round, protruding belly, often tight to the touch, is another significant indicator of fatty liver. This visual and tactile check is simple but effective.
When to Get Blood Tests or Ultrasound
If two out of these three home tests indicate risk, it is recommended to consult a doctor and proceed with a blood test or abdominal ultrasound for confirmation.
Scientific Validation
Fatty liver is often a silent condition, progressing without noticeable symptoms but gradually impairing liver function. These three home tests provide a preliminary, scientifically recognized assessment of liver health and can serve as an early warning system.
