Debunking the Myth: Dressing Newborns in New Clothes Is Not Bad Luck, Doctors Say

It is a common belief in many households that newborn babies should wear old clothes, as dressing them in new clothes is considered bad luck. However, leading gynecologist Dr. Aruna Kalra has recently addressed this misconception, providing clarity for new parents.

Traditionally, babies were often dressed in old clothes during their first days. Families followed this practice due to cultural beliefs or superstitions that new clothing could bring misfortune. But is there any truth to this?

In a video shared on Instagram, Dr. Kalra explained that advising new parents against dressing their newborns in new clothes is entirely unfounded. She emphasized that there is no scientific or medical reason to avoid new garments.

The real reason old clothes were preferred in earlier times was practical: repeated washing made the fabric soft and gentle on the newborn’s delicate skin. Associating this practice with superstition is misleading.

Dr. Kalra further noted that modern muslin and cotton clothes are readily available in the market. When properly washed, sun-dried, and ironed, they are perfectly safe for newborns. She encouraged parents to feel empowered to raise their child according to their own choices, free from outdated beliefs.

Key takeaway: Parents can confidently dress their newborns in new clothes, focusing on comfort and hygiene rather than superstition.
