Cough During Pregnancy Can Be Dangerous: Risk of Oxygen Deprivation for Baby, Dr. Sonia Shares First Steps to Take

Coughing is often seen as a minor inconvenience, but during pregnancy, it can pose serious health risks for both mother and baby. Obstetrician Dr. Sonia Gupta advises expecting mothers not to take coughing lightly and explains the immediate steps to manage it.

Potential Risks of Cough in Pregnancy
Pregnancy lowers immunity, making women more susceptible to lung infections and pneumonia triggered by persistent coughing. Difficulty in breathing and oxygen deficiency can affect the baby as well. Coughing in the ninth month or during labor can also create complications in delivery.

Immediate Measures to Control Cough
Dr. Sonia recommends that as soon as coughing begins, pregnant women should:

  • Drink warm water regularly
  • Inhale steam
  • Gargle with warm water
  • Consume turmeric milk

It is important not to take strong decoctions or medicines without medical advice.

Consult a Doctor Promptly
Pregnant women experiencing persistent cough should visit a doctor for proper check-up. Safe medications during pregnancy include:

  • Levocetirizine tablets
  • Special salt-based cough syrups
  • Paracetamol in case of fever
  • Pregnancy-safe antibiotics if needed

Using a Nebulizer
If coughing interferes with sleep, eating, or breathing, or causes asthma-like symptoms, doctors may recommend nebulization. This can be done at home or in the hospital using a nebulizer machine with prescribed medication.
