In North India, it’s hard to imagine a meal without wheat rotis—one of the most commonly consumed staples. However, according to Ayurvedic expert Dr. Saleem Zaidi, wheat may be far more harmful to your health than most people realize.
From Traditional Wheat to Modern Hybrid
Dr. Zaidi explains that wheat from earlier times—native, unprocessed varieties—was rich in fiber, protein, and essential minerals. It supported digestion and overall health, preventing nutrient deficiencies and weakness.
Modern wheat, however, is largely hybrid and refined, with most fiber, zinc, and magnesium removed during processing. Today’s wheat primarily provides calories in the form of blood sugar, but lacks the nutritional value of traditional grains.
Health Risks of Modern Wheat
High gluten content in refined wheat can lead to various digestive and metabolic issues, including:
- Bloating
- Acidity
- Indigestion
What Can You Do?
To maintain better health and energy, Dr. Zaidi recommends reducing or eliminating wheat from your diet. Instead, incorporate millet flours such as:
- Jowar (sorghum)
- Bajra (pearl millet)
- Ragi (finger millet)
Millet-based rotis are lighter on the stomach, nutrient-rich, and can significantly improve digestion, energy levels, and overall wellness.
