Actress Aalia Furniturewala recently revealed on social media that she is suffering from a digestive disorder that causes persistent bloating. The condition, known as SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), has left her dealing with swelling, fatigue, and “brain fog,” among other symptoms, while she continues her treatment.
What is SIBO?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, SIBO occurs when bacteria grow excessively in the small intestine. While some bacteria in the small intestine are normal and necessary, an overgrowth—especially of harmful bacteria—can disrupt digestion and nutrient absorption. These bacteria ferment carbohydrates into gas and short-chain fatty acids, causing bloating and discomfort.
Impact on Health
Excess bacteria also consume vital nutrients like protein, vitamin B12, and bile salts, which can result in malnutrition. Over time, nutrient deficiencies may affect the bones and nervous system, alongside common gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, unintentional weight loss, weakness, and fatigue.
Treatment Options
Doctors typically prescribe antibiotics to control bacterial overgrowth, with the duration of treatment varying depending on the severity and extent of bacterial proliferation. Some patients experience relief within weeks, while others may require months of therapy.
Aalia Furniturewala, granddaughter of veteran actor Kabir Bedi, shared her personal experience to raise awareness about SIBO and its challenges, emphasizing the importance of proper medical supervision.
