New Delhi: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a silent health condition affecting millions of women, yet its symptoms often go unnoticed. Studies suggest that, on average, 1 in 5 women may have PCOS, but early signs are frequently mistaken for normal weight gain or hormonal changes related to age. Detecting it early, however, can make the condition easier to manage.
Key Symptoms to Watch For
PCOS affects women differently. Some may experience weight gain, especially around the abdomen; others may have irregular periods, excessive hair growth, acne, or hair thinning. Mood swings and fatigue are also common.
Dr. Nidhi Rajotia, Senior Consultant at Artemis Hospitals, explains that many women mistake these symptoms for lifestyle issues or stress, rather than hormonal imbalance.
Why Weight Increases
In PCOS, the body’s insulin regulation is disrupted, leading to higher blood sugar levels. This results in fat accumulation, particularly around the belly, which is often misattributed to overeating or lack of exercise.
Other Symptoms Include:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Acne and oily skin
- Hair thinning or hair loss
- Unwanted facial or body hair
- Fatigue and low energy
Early Diagnosis is Crucial
Teenage girls with PCOS may often ignore early signs, attributing them to puberty. Consulting a doctor promptly can help manage the condition effectively. Awareness and timely intervention are key to controlling symptoms and maintaining overall health.
