Why a Two-Year-Old Film With a 5.8 IMDb Rating Is Suddenly Trending on OTT

The OTT space has witnessed an unusual trend over the past few days, with a two-year-old Telugu action-drama film suddenly climbing the popularity charts on streaming platforms. The film, Bhagavanth Kesari (2023), is currently trending on both Prime Video and JioHotstar, despite holding a modest IMDb rating of 5.8.

Starring Nandamuri Balakrishna in the lead role, alongside Kajal Aggarwal, Sreeleela, and Arjun Rampal as the antagonist, Bhagavanth Kesari was released in 2023 with a production budget of approximately ₹65 crore. At the box office, it performed well, earning a net collection of ₹84.78 crore in India and a worldwide gross of ₹114.50 crore.

Directed by veteran filmmaker Anil Ravipudi, the film received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. While opinions were divided on its execution, the film’s core theme and emotional arc were widely appreciated. Its critical recognition was further cemented when it won the Best Telugu Feature Film award at the 71st National Film Awards. Additionally, it secured the Third Best Feature Film award at the Telangana State Gaddar Awards.

The Reason Behind the Sudden OTT Surge

The renewed interest in Bhagavanth Kesari is closely linked to the upcoming release of Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan, scheduled to hit theatres on Friday, January 9. This film is being promoted as Vijay’s final cinematic outing before his full-time entry into politics.

For months, social media discussions and fan theories have suggested that Jana Nayagan is inspired by the storyline of Bhagavanth Kesari. The speculation intensified after the release of Jana Nayagan’s trailer, with viewers pointing out striking similarities in character arcs and narrative elements. Although Jana Nayagan director H. Vinoth has categorically denied any inspiration, asserting that the story is entirely original, Vijay’s fans remain unconvinced. As a result, audiences have flocked to OTT platforms to watch or rewatch Bhagavanth Kesari ahead of Jana Nayagan’s release.

Story Overview of Bhagavanth Kesari

The film revolves around Nelakonda Bhagavanth Kesari, a former convict who becomes the guardian of Vijayalakshmi, fondly called “Viji,” after the death of her father, CI Srikanth. Bhagavanth wishes to fulfill Srikanth’s dream of seeing his daughter join the Indian Army and seeks the help of psychologist Dr. Katyayani, played by Kajal Aggarwal. However, Viji harbours a deep-seated fear from her childhood and instead wishes to marry her boyfriend, Karthik.

The narrative takes a dramatic turn with the entry of Rahul Sanghvi, a powerful businessman portrayed by Arjun Rampal. Rahul is involved in a conspiracy to steal a high-profile national project and murders the Deputy Chief Minister to cover his tracks. When crucial evidence lands on Viji’s laptop, she becomes a target, forcing Bhagavanth to step in to protect her. The story further unfolds into a tense face-off between Bhagavanth and Rahul, revealing a shared past and a long-standing vendetta.

The film delves into Bhagavanth’s backstory, exposing his former life as a courageous circle inspector in a tribal region and the events that led to his wrongful imprisonment. As the present-day conflict escalates, the film balances action with emotional drama, culminating in questions about redemption, courage, and Viji’s ultimate choice.

Where to Watch

Bhagavanth Kesari is currently available for streaming on Prime Video and JioHotstar, including a Hindi-dubbed version. With the buzz around Jana Nayagan growing louder, the film’s sudden resurgence on OTT highlights how audience curiosity and fan-driven narratives can breathe new life into older releases—ratings notwithstanding.
