The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a summons to veteran South Indian actor Jayaram in connection with the Sabarimala gold theft case. He is asked to appear for questioning on 17 February. It is important to note that Jayaram is not an accused in the case; the ED has called him only as part of their inquiry.

About Jayaram

Jayaram, originally from Malayalam cinema, has appeared in over 200 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada industries. A Padma Shri awardee, he has acted in recent hits like ‘Game Changer’, ‘Retro’, and portrayed Rajshekhar in ‘Kantara Chapter 1’.

The ED is reportedly investigating Jayaram’s possible involvement in certain religious rituals linked to the case and any potential financial connections with the main accused. Officials have clarified that no allegations of theft have been made against Jayaram, and his questioning is aimed at gathering further details.

Background of ED Investigation

The ED’s involvement began last month when the Kochi unit registered an ECIR under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been probing the case and has already recorded Jayaram’s statement. So far, a total of 12 individuals have been summoned as part of the ongoing investigation, which was initially registered in October 2025.

Jayaram’s Life and Career

Born Jayaram Subramaniam on 10 December 1964 in Perumbavoor, Kerala, he is the middle child in his family. His father Subramaniam and mother Thankam are deceased. Jayaram studied at Sree Shankar College, Kaladi, and trained in Chenda-Tabla percussion under Guru Pallassana Nandakumar. He began his career as a mimicry artist and medical representative before entering films.

Jayaram made his film debut in ‘Aparan’ (1988), and rose to stardom with ‘Meleparambil Anveedu’ (1993). He has won two Kerala State Film Awards, two Kerala Film Critics Awards, a Tamil Nadu State Film Award, a South Indian International Movie Award, and four Filmfare Awards (South). He is also a talented playback singer and percussionist.

The Sabarimala Gold Theft Case

The main accused in the case is Unnikrishnan Potty, who allegedly stole gold from Sabarimala Temple during maintenance activities and conducted private religious rituals in 2019, reportedly involving copper plates covered in gold. Investigators are examining whether Jayaram had any participation in these rituals or any communication with Potty. The case involves two separate incidents of gold being removed from temple premises.

So far, the SIT has arrested 12 individuals, including former Travancore Devaswom Board president B. Murari Babu and S. Srikumar, and has also questioned Jayaram at his Chennai residence.

Legal Status of Main Accused

Unnikrishnan Potty is currently out on bail. As the money laundering investigation continues, the ED may summon him again for further questioning.
