Mumbai: Veteran singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit, a prominent figure in Bollywood during the 1970s and 1980s, passed away on November 6 due to cardiac arrest. She was bedridden for 16 years following multiple surgeries, including hip surgery, and her condition had deteriorated significantly over the years. Sulakshana Pandit was the niece of the legendary classical singer Pandit Jasraj and sister of acclaimed actress Vijayta Pandit.

In an emotional interview with ETimes, Vijayta Pandit described her sister’s final years. She said, “Sulakshana didi was like a second mother to me. After her hip injury and several surgeries, she remained bedridden for 16 years. During all these years, my family and I took care of her. We have lost not just a family member but also a talented singer and actress who worked with many big names of her time.”

Sulakshana began her career as a child playback singer and later transitioned into acting. She made her acting debut in 1975 with the film Uljhan opposite Sanjeev Kumar. She went on to appear in films such as Sankoch, Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandan, and Waqt Ki Deewar, establishing herself as a versatile and accomplished performer.

Vijayta Pandit recalled, “It is ironic that Sulakshana passed away on November 6, the same date as Sanjeev Kumar’s death anniversary in 1985. Everyone knew the deep bond and love she shared with him.”

Sanjeev Kumar had proposed marriage to Sulakshana, but the proposal was declined, leaving her unmarried for life. Vijayta added, “Both Sulakshana and Sanjeev Kumar remained unmarried. I feel the universe gave their relationship its own form of closure — she passed away on the same day as his death.”
