“There’s No God in Our Home”: Shruti Haasan Opens Up About Her Non-Religious Upbringing and Family Beliefs

Actress Shruti Haasan recently shared candid insights about her family and upbringing in a revealing interview. According to her, there is no rule in their household about avoiding non-vegetarian food on Tuesdays. She also revealed that her father, legendary actor Kamal Haasan, dislikes tattoos and astrology, and the family maintains a largely secular and non-religious lifestyle.

Growing Up in a Non-Religious Household

Shruti Haasan, daughter of Kamal Haasan, has carved a niche for herself in Hindi and Tamil cinema, building her career on talent rather than legacy. Speaking about her upbringing in an atheist family, she explained, “There was no place for God in our house. Dad doesn’t like to discuss religion, and for us, the concept of God was never relevant. We didn’t have any restrictions, like avoiding non-veg on Tuesdays. Perhaps that’s why, from childhood, I felt that art itself is God.”

Language, Family, and Early Life

Shruti described growing up surrounded by Tamil and Hindi languages, saying her mother worried she wouldn’t learn Hindi because they mostly spoke Tamil at home. “For several years, this affected my Tamil as well. My parents never went to school, so they didn’t know how to guide children’s education,” she added. She also recounted moving to Mumbai after her parents separated, emphasizing that her childhood was far from ordinary. “I grew up on film sets. At five, I would see elephants and dogs casually standing around us. Meeting famous actors and visiting extraordinary places was part of my life.”

Influence of Ancestry and Beliefs

Shruti spoke about her belief in nature-based spirituality, saying, “Our ancestors were women. I believe in Wicca and idol worship. We are descendants of women who were called witches but were never burned. I feel their blood runs through my veins.”

Father’s Views on Astrology and Tattoos

Shruti added that her father, Kamal Haasan, is highly practical and creative. “If you talk to him about astrology, he’ll say, ‘Run away.’ He even dislikes tattoos. I feel he is a child of God himself,” she said.

Shruti Haasan’s reflections offer a rare glimpse into the life of a celebrity family that values creativity and rationality over religious orthodoxy, while maintaining strong ties to ancestral beliefs and cultural heritage.
