Suniel Shetty Questions Bollywood’s Historical Focus: “Why Only Akbar and Babur?”

Veteran actor Suniel Shetty has sparked conversation about India’s cinematic representation of history, raising questions about why films often highlight figures like Akbar and Babur while heroes such as Rajput kings and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj receive less attention.

Reflections on ‘Kesari Veer’
Suniel Shetty starred in the 2025 film Kesari Veer, which depicted multiple historical attacks on Gujarat’s Somnath Temple. Despite extensive research and effort, the film underperformed at the box office. In a recent interview with Lehren Retro, Suniel explained:
“We conducted thorough research before making the film, but unfortunately, it didn’t perform well. Distribution is a major challenge; theaters were hard to secure. The producer handled distribution personally, which wasn’t effective, and a good film was wasted.”

He also shared his deep emotional connection with Somnath Temple, adding:
“My feelings for Somnath are very strong. Despite being looted multiple times, it still stands today.”

On Historical Narratives in Indian Cinema
When asked about the broader issue, Suniel remarked:
“Why do we only talk about Aurangzeb, Akbar, Babur, or Birbal? Our history should reflect our culture. It should celebrate the Vedas, Rajput kings, Shivaji Maharaj, and heroes from every state. Every important figure deserves recognition.”

Supporting Calls for Curriculum Reform
Suniel’s comments echo earlier calls by actor Akshay Kumar, who during the promotion of his film Prithviraj Chauhan, emphasized that Indian history syllabi should focus more on the country’s cultural heritage and native rulers. Akshay had noted that while invaders are covered extensively, figures like Prithviraj Chauhan receive only brief mentions, leaving many stories of India’s heroes unknown.

Recent Commemorations at Somnath Temple
In early January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Somnath Temple to participate in the Somnath Swabhimaan Parv, commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of the first attack on the temple in 1026. The celebrations included a 72-hour continuous chanting of the Omkar mantra, a bravery march led by the PM, and a drone-operated light show with 3,000 drones.

Upcoming Projects
Suniel Shetty recently appeared in a cameo role in Border 2 alongside his son Ahan Shetty, Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, and Varun Dhawan. He is also set to appear in the multi-starrer Welcome to the Jungle and will be part of Hera Pheri 3.
