Kochi/Muscat: The South Indian film industry is mourning the sudden demise of Sharda Iyer, sister of popular Malayalam and Tamil playback singer Chitra Iyer. Sharda, aged 54, passed away on January 2 in Oman while on a trekking trip.
According to reports, Sharda, a former manager with Oman Air, was trekking in the rugged Wadi Ghoul area of Jebel Shams in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate along with a group. Officials stated that the region is known for its steep cliffs and challenging terrain, making it particularly hazardous for trekkers. The exact cause of her death has not been officially confirmed.
Sharda, originally from Thazhava in Kerala, was residing in Muscat. She had recently returned to Oman on December 24 after attending her father’s funeral in India on December 11.
Chitra Iyer shared an emotional post on Instagram expressing her grief over her sister’s untimely death. She wrote, “My mischievous little sister! You always ran so fast! But I will catch you… soon, I promise. Love you.” She further added, “How will I live without you? Your voice, endlessly chatting on the phone or shouting from the next room… I will miss you.”
Sharda’s body is being brought back to Kerala, and her last rites will be held on January 7 at the family home in Thazhava. The news has left friends, family, and fans in deep shock as the family grapples with the loss of both Sharda and their father in such a short span.
