Shruti Haasan Opens Up About Anxiety, Acting Break and Life in London: “Couldn’t Do Everyday Tasks”

South and Bollywood actress-singer Shruti Haasan, daughter of Kamal Haasan and Sarika, recently revealed that she took a break from acting in 2018 due to struggles with anxiety. Speaking candidly, she shared how the time away from work helped her focus on her mental health and rediscover herself.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter

Shruti, who grew up in a family deeply rooted in the arts, said:
“I was raised in a household where my parents were extremely skilled in the language of art. They encouraged me to explore my interests. I could focus on my priorities while experimenting with other things too.”

The 2018 Break

The actress hinted that her break from acting coincided with a personal breakup. At the time, she was reportedly linked to theater actor Michael Korsel, but the relationship ended soon after.

Finding Solace in Separation

Shruti reflected on how the separation, though painful, turned out to be a blessing in disguise:
“It was the best time for me to understand myself and focus on my mental health. I had been struggling with depression for several years, which even affected my ability to do daily tasks. That period allowed me to work on myself.”

Life in London

During her time in London, Shruti lived alone and immersed herself in music and routine:
“I didn’t know what I was looking for or who I truly was. Living alone, doing simple tasks like washing my clothes, cooking, commuting to museums, practicing writing for hours, and presenting my music to new audiences without expectations—it was a transformative experience. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Another Breakup

After Michael, Shruti dated artist Shantanu Hazarika for several years, but the relationship ended in 2024. Despite personal setbacks, she continues to focus on her art and well-being.
