Ramesh Sippy’s iconic blockbuster Sholay has returned to theatres 50 years after its original release, restored in 4K with the original climax and previously deleted scenes. Fans were deeply moved, especially as the film brought back memories of Dharmendra, who passed away on 24 November 2025. Many called Sholay a timeless masterpiece and celebrated its legacy on social media platform X.
Sholay: The Final Cut
Sholay completed 50 years in August 2025. On 12 December, the film was re-released in its uncut 4K version, allowing audiences to witness scenes that were either deleted or never included in the original release. The film stars Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan as Jai-Veeru, along with Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Asrani, and A.K. Hangal. Seeing these stars on the big screen once again evoked strong emotions among viewers, particularly since several of these legendary actors are no longer with us.
Audience Reactions
Fans took to X to share their reactions after watching Sholay – The Final Cut:
- “Watching Sholay in 4K was a pure delight.”

Box Office Legacy
Originally released on 15 August 1975, Sholay was made on a budget of ₹3 crore, which went up to ₹5 crore during production. Despite the limited number of cinemas in Mumbai at the time, the film amazed everyone by earning ₹35 crore, setting a record for Indian cinema. Sippy recently told Dainik Bhaskar that although weekday audiences were low, the shows were consistently houseful across 33 theatres in Mumbai.
The re-release of Sholay has not only allowed fans to relive a classic but also reminded the world of its enduring impact on Indian cinema.
