Producer Shailendra Singh has opened up about the infamous press conference in 2003, where Vivek Oberoi publicly accused Salman Khan of serious misconduct. Speaking in an interview, Shailendra revealed that when he met Salman following the conference, the actor was “furious” and needed to be calmed down. He also offered Salman advice on how to handle the situation. According to Shailendra, Salman made sure that Vivek’s career in Bollywood was impacted.
The 2003 Controversy
The controversy dates back to 2003, when Vivek Oberoi held a press conference alleging that Salman Khan had threatened his life and hurled abusive language at him. Vivek claimed that Salman had called him 41 times between midnight of March 29 and 5 AM the next morning. Following this, Salman’s anger reportedly reached a boiling point.
Shailendra Singh, known for producing films like Traffic Signal, Phir Milenge, and Page 3, shared his account with Screen magazine. He explained that Salman, a close friend of his even before becoming a major star, was like a “caged tiger” that night—visibly enraged but also calculated. Shailendra advised Salman to remain calm and not react impulsively, saying, “Sit, have a drink, and let him (Vivek Oberoi) do what he wants. Anything else can be done later.”
Ensuring Vivek Oberoi’s Career Was Affected
Shailendra added, “I told Salman not to rush into any action, to wait, and fight quietly. I think he followed that advice. He made sure that Vivek struggled to get work in Bollywood. I can’t say for certain, but it seems likely.”
The Backstory with Aishwarya Rai
At the time of the press conference, Salman was in a relationship with Aishwarya Rai, who had previously broken up with him and moved on with Vivek Oberoi. Vivek’s allegations further isolated him within the industry. He gradually began to be sidelined, and film offers dwindled.
Vivek Oberoi Later Admitted His Mistake
Years later, Vivek admitted on Farah Khan’s talk show Tere Mere Beech Mein that holding the press conference was a grave mistake. He acknowledged saying things he shouldn’t have and expressed regret. He even apologized to Salman at an award function, but the rift reportedly remains, with Salman never fully forgiving him.
