Rupee Slides Against Dollar: Bollywood Celebrities Stay Silent While Old 2013 Jabs Resurface

The Indian rupee has crossed the ₹90 mark against the US dollar, with the current rate at ₹89.95 per dollar, yet Bollywood celebrities remain noticeably silent. This is in stark contrast to 2013, when the rupee stood at ₹56.57 per dollar, and several stars openly criticized the then Congress-led government under Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Celebrities’ 2013 Reactions Resurface

Back in 2013, actors like Juhi Chawla, Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Shilpa Shetty had voiced their frustrations on social media over the falling rupee:

  • Juhi Chawla had joked about naming her underwear “Dollar” so it wouldn’t keep falling like the rupee.
  • Amitabh Bachchan coined the term “Rupeed (Ru-Pee-D)” to describe the currency’s fall.
  • Anupam Kher tweeted, “Everything is falling—the rupee and the value of humans.”
  • Ritesh Deshmukh commented on the rupee needing “J-Plus security.”
  • Shilpa Shetty wrote a satirical tweet comparing the rupee to a patient in ICU, humorously highlighting the nation’s financial stress.

Current Scenario: Silence Prevails

With the rupee now nearly double its 2013 value against the dollar, these same celebrities have largely stayed quiet, even as half of the country reacts with concern. Their past social media posts have now resurfaced, highlighting the contrast in reactions over the years.
