Bollywood actress Reena Roy, one of the top stars of the 1980s, recently celebrated her 69th birthday. Though she has been away from acting for the past 26 years, her personal life continues to make headlines.
Reena Roy’s romantic relationships were often in the spotlight. She had a well-known affair with actor Shatrughan Sinha during the filming of Kalicharan in 1973. The pair shared a deep connection, and Reena even wanted to marry him, reportedly giving him an ultimatum to choose her within eight days. However, Shatrughan, who was already married to Poonam Sinha, chose to stay with his wife, leaving Reena heartbroken.
During this emotional turmoil, Vinod Khanna entered Reena’s life. The two worked together in several films, including Khoon Pasina, Jail Yatra, Daku Aur Jawan, Insaan, and Aakhri Daku. Reena’s brother, Raja Roy, revealed in a 1983 interview with Stardust that Reena had developed such a deep emotional bond with Vinod Khanna that she had contemplated leaving Bollywood entirely to join him at Osho’s ashram and live a life of renunciation. This decision came after her heartbreak with Shatrughan Sinha.
However, the relationship with Vinod Khanna did not materialize. At the time, Vinod was married to Geetanjali Khanna (mother of Akshay Khanna) and later chose to join Osho’s ashram, taking up simple chores like gardening. He eventually divorced Geetanjali and married Kavita Khanna in 1990.
Reena Roy later married Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan in 1983, moved to Pakistan, and temporarily stepped away from films. The marriage ended in divorce in 1990, after which Reena returned to India and made a comeback in Bollywood. Her last film appearance was in 2000’s Refugee. Today, Reena Roy stays away from acting and runs an acting school in Mumbai alongside her sister Barkha Roy, which they founded in 2004.
Reena Roy’s life story reflects the highs and lows of fame, love, and personal choices, revealing a woman who, at one point, considered abandoning everything in pursuit of love and spiritual solace.
