Ramanand Sagar’s Son Anand Sagar Passes Away at 84, Last Rites Performed in Mumbai

Mumbai, February 13, 2026:
Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, son of legendary filmmaker and television pioneer Ramanand Sagar, passed away at the age of 84. His last rites were performed on February 13 at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai, in the presence of grieving family members and close relatives.

The news of his demise was shared by the Sagar family through an emotional post on social media. Expressing deep sorrow, the family wrote, “With immense grief and profound sadness, we inform you of the passing of our beloved father, Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra. His funeral will take place on February 13 at 4:30 PM at the Hindu crematorium ground, Pawan Hans.”

Anand Sagar was known for carrying forward the remarkable legacy of his father, who created the iconic television epic ‘Ramayan’, a show that continues to be remembered as one of India’s most celebrated serials. Anand Sagar played a significant role in preserving and modernizing the Sagar family’s mythological storytelling tradition.

He was also the creator of the 2008 television adaptation of ‘Ramayan’, featuring Gurmeet Choudhary as Lord Ram and Debina Bonnerjee as Sita, which gained widespread popularity and brought the actors national fame.

Apart from producing new projects, Anand Sagar actively contributed to the creative and managerial operations of the family’s production house Sagar Arts, ensuring that the heritage of mythological television remained alive for newer generations.

His passing comes as yet another major loss for the Sagar family. In August 2025, his brother Prem Sagar, the renowned producer behind mythological classics such as ‘Vikram Aur Betaal’, also passed away. Earlier, the eldest brother Subhash Sagar died in 2009 after a prolonged illness.

Ramanand Sagar and his wife Leelavati Sagar had five children—four sons and one daughter. With Anand Sagar’s demise, three of the four sons have now passed away, leaving behind only the youngest son, Moti Sagar, who continues to work in the television industry and has reportedly been associated with several successful projects.

The death of Anand Sagar marks the end of an era for Indian mythological television, as the Sagar family’s contribution shaped the cultural and spiritual entertainment landscape of the country for decades.
