Actor Rajpal Yadav, currently in Tihar Jail over a long-standing cheque bounce case, has partially repaid the debt against him, his lawyer revealed during a recent hearing.
Court Hearing and Next Steps
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court heard Yadav’s bail petition, but no relief was granted. The next hearing is scheduled for February 16, 2026. Meanwhile, the court has issued notices to the complainant, Murli Project Company.
Lawyer Confirms Partial Payment
Yadav’s lawyer, Bhaskar Upadhyay, stated that the actor has already repaid half of the total debt. “Out of a total investment of ₹5 crore, ₹2.5 crore has been paid. The remaining amount will be addressed in court on Monday,” Upadhyay said.
The lawyer clarified that Yadav never refused to repay the invested money. Earlier, when discussions regarding repayment took place, the company reportedly declined to accept the payment.
“The ₹5 crore was invested as part of a project, and Rajpal Yadav has never denied repaying it. Previously, the company refused to take the money when payment was proposed,” – Bhaskar Upadhyay, Rajpal Yadav’s lawyer
Time Served and Background
Upadhyay added that the case dates back to a 2012 agreement. Yadav has already served three months of his sentence. Regarding the source of the repayments, Upadhyay declined to comment, citing it as a family matter.
Bail Appeal to Attend Niece’s Wedding
Yadav had applied for bail to attend his niece’s wedding in Shahjahanpur, but the court has not yet delivered a final verdict. The next hearing on his bail petition is set for February 16, 2026.
Surrender to Tihar Jail
Rajpal Yadav surrendered to Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, following a directive from the Delhi High Court. The actor had taken a loan in 2010 for his film “Ata Pata Lapata”, but was unable to repay it. In 2018, a Magistrate’s Court sentenced Yadav and his wife to six months in jail under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Section 138. Despite multiple opportunities granted by the Delhi High Court, repeated delays in repayment led to the court issuing notices, ultimately resulting in Yadav’s surrender.
