Chennai: The highly anticipated collaboration between Tamil cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, titled Thalaivar 173, has hit a major roadblock even before filming could begin. Director Sundar C has decided to step away from the project due to unforeseen circumstances.

The news comes as a shock to fans who were thrilled at the prospect of these two superstars sharing the screen after decades. Sundar C’s wife, Khushbu Sundar, briefly shared an official statement on social media confirming the director’s exit, which was later deleted. The statement has since gone viral on X (formerly Twitter).

In the statement, Sundar C said:
“With a heavy heart, I share that due to unexpected and unavoidable circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the prestigious project ‘Thalaivar 173’.”

He added a personal note expressing gratitude and respect for the actors:
“Life sometimes demands that we walk our own path, even if it differs from our dreams. My association with these two legends is long-standing, and I will always hold them in the highest regard. The moments I shared with them recently will remain cherished, and I will continue to draw inspiration from their guidance as I move forward.”

Sundar C also apologized to the fans and the stars:
“Although I am stepping away from this opportunity, I will continue to seek their expert guidance. I sincerely thank Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan for trusting me with this project. If this news disappoints those eagerly awaiting the film, I offer my heartfelt apologies and promise to deliver entertainment that lives up to your expectations.”

He concluded by thanking supporters:
