Mumbai: Actress Radhika Apte, who recently became a mother, has voiced her deep concern over the increasing prevalence of violent content in Indian cinema and on streaming platforms. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, she admitted feeling fearful about raising her child in a world where extreme violence is portrayed as entertainment.
“Extremely Disturbing” Content on Screen
Radhika described the current wave of on-screen brutality as “extremely disturbing” and said, “I am deeply troubled. I cannot bear to raise my child in a world where such violence is considered entertainment. I find it heartbreaking.” She emphasized that filmmakers often cross boundaries unnecessarily, presenting horrifying scenes under the guise of storytelling.
Impact on Society and Storytelling
The actress argued that graphic depictions of violence are not essential to tell a story. “If I want to tell a story about someone committing terrible acts, I don’t need to watch the gruesome details. That is not storytelling,” she stated. Radhika further cautioned that sensationalism has overshadowed meaningful narratives, particularly after the pandemic, urging creators to prioritize character and story over shock value.
Upcoming Project: ‘Sali Mohabbat’
Radhika will next be seen in the thriller ‘Sali Mohabbat’, premiering on ZEE5 on December 12, 2025. The film, directed by Tiska Chopra, has already received accolades at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the Chicago South Asian Film Festival.
