Comedian and television host Bharti Singh has landed in controversy after a remark she made about actress Ayesha Khan on the reality cooking show Laughter Chefs Season 3 was widely perceived as body-shaming, triggering strong backlash from viewers on social media.
The episode featured the cast of the upcoming film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, including Kapil Sharma, Ayesha Khan, Warina Hussain, Tridha Choudhury and Parul Gulati, who appeared on the show to promote their movie. While Bharti is known for her humour and candid interactions with guests, her joke this time failed to amuse a section of the audience.
The Comment That Sparked the Controversy
During the episode, after the actresses entered the set dancing to the song Pehli Uddi Phurr, Bharti made a remark comparing Ayesha Khan’s physique to that of comedian Krishna Abhishek, saying she appeared “broad-built” like him. The comment visibly embarrassed Ayesha, who was seen covering her stomach with her hands and moving away awkwardly.
Kapil Sharma immediately intervened, asking Bharti whether the remark was meant as a compliment. Actress Parul Gulati also objected, telling Bharti that she should not have said that on air. In response, Bharti attempted to deflect the criticism by saying, “Sorry, I am pregnant.”
Social Media Backlash
Clips from the episode went viral within hours, drawing sharp criticism from viewers. Many users accused Bharti Singh of being insensitive and inappropriate, especially on national television. Several comments described the remark as “shameless,” “disrespectful,” and “demeaning to women.”
One user wrote, “Bharti often behaves rudely with women on the show. How can someone who has herself faced body-shaming do the same to another woman?”
Another commented, “This wasn’t funny at all. It was insulting to women with fuller bodies—and Ayesha isn’t even overweight.”
Others expressed sympathy for Ayesha Khan, calling the moment “awkward” and “unnecessary.”
Film Promotion Overshadowed
The controversy overshadowed the promotional appearance of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, which stars Kapil Sharma along with Ayesha Khan, Warina Hussain, Tridha Choudhury, Parul Gulati and Manjot Singh. Directed by Anukalp Goswami, the comedy-drama has received mixed reviews and is reportedly struggling at the box office, earning around ₹8.15 crore in its first four days, amid stiff competition from other releases.
About the Show
Laughter Chefs Season 3 features several celebrity pairs, including Vivian Dsena–Eisha Singh, Elvish Yadav–Eisha Malviya, Karan Kundrra–Tejasswi Prakash, and Gurmeet Choudhary–Debina Bonnerjee. The show is streamed on JioHotstar and also airs on Colors TV.
As discussions around body positivity and respectful humour gain momentum, the incident has reignited debate over the boundaries of comedy and the responsibility of public figures on mainstream television.
