Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra has expressed her excitement over Zohraan Mamdani’s election as New York City’s 111th Mayor, marking a historic moment as the city’s youngest and first Muslim mayor. Chopra, who resides in New York with her husband Nick Jonas and daughter Malti Marie Jonas, shared her joy on Instagram, posting a screenshot of Mamdani’s victory speech. She wrote, “Congratulations Zohraan Mamdani, 111th Mayor of New York City! You have made history. Kudos, Mira Nair!”
Zohraan Mamdani, the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmud Mamdani, was born in Kampala, Uganda, and spent part of his childhood in Cape Town before settling in New York. At just 34 years old, he has an impressive academic background, including a degree in African Studies from Bowdoin College and prior experience as a member of the New York State Assembly.
Priyanka Chopra moved to New York in 2016 during the shoot of the American TV show Quantico, where she met Nick Jonas at the Met Gala. The couple got engaged in July 2018 in Crete, Greece, and tied the knot in December 2018 at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, blending Hindu and Christian wedding traditions.
During her New York stay, Priyanka also ventured into the restaurant business, opening ‘Sona’ in 2021, serving Indian cuisine, though it was closed in 2024 due to rising losses.
Mamdani’s victory represents not only a milestone for New York but also a moment of pride for Indians worldwide, celebrated by both the diaspora and celebrities like Priyanka Chopra.
