Renowned actor, singer, and lyricist Piyush Mishra is a rare talent who seamlessly blends acting, music, and poetry. Along with his band Ballimaran, he is set to tour 15 Indian cities with “Arambh 2.0”, a special musical show in collaboration with the Times of India Group, beginning 7th November in Mumbai.
In an exclusive interview, Mishra reflected on his early days in Delhi theatre during the 1980s and his initial struggles in Mumbai. “When I first came in 1989, the city broke me. I wasn’t ready then. After honing my skills, Mumbai embraced me fully when I returned in 2003,” he said.
He opened up about his past battle with substance use, stressing: “I have never created a song, a performance, or written anything under intoxication. Creativity thrives only in clarity.”
Mishra also spoke about maintaining authenticity in music, despite pressure to conform to mainstream cinema. “Those who valued my work collaborated. I never chased stardom; I focused on craft and mindfulness through daily meditation and Vipassana,” he explained.
On his fearless persona, he said: “It’s my nature. Earlier, I reacted impulsively; now I accept people and situations as they are. This awareness brings peace and enhances creativity.”
Ballimaran’s journey from intimate gatherings to large theaters and stadiums hasn’t changed their approach. “Whether in a small space or a stadium, connecting with the audience is key. Our songs are like dialogues, with pauses, statements, and emotions. Every performance aims to leave the audience saying, ‘Maza aa gaya’,” Mishra added.
With his unique blend of theatre, music, and storytelling, Piyush Mishra continues to mesmerize audiences, ensuring every show is an immersive and relatable experience.
