In today’s era, audiences increasingly value strong stories over star power, and Laaptaa Ladies is a perfect example. Released on March 1, 2024, this film, made on a modest budget of ₹4–5 crore, features no major Bollywood stars but has won hearts with its engaging narrative. The film went on to win 23 awards and was even India’s official entry for the 97th Oscars.
Directed by Kiran Rao and based on Biplab Goswami’s novel, Laaptaa Ladies stars Nitanshi Goyal, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Srivastava. Set in 2001 rural India, it follows the story of brides Phool (Nitanshi) and Jaya (Pratibha), whose lives turn chaotic after a mix-up during a train journey, leading to humorous and heartfelt situations as their husbands search for them.
Despite its small budget, the film earned over ₹21 crore at the domestic box office and ₹27.66 crore worldwide. It streamed on Netflix from April 26, 2024, where it quickly climbed the trending charts, becoming the second most-watched Indian film of the year with 13.8 million views—surpassing even Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Tripti Dimri’s Animal.
Critics and audiences alike praised the film for its performances and storytelling. Nitanshi Goyal won the Filmfare Best New Actress award, Pratibha Ranta earned the Critics’ Best Actress, and Kiran Rao was awarded Best Director. In total, the film secured 13 Filmfare and 10 IIFA awards.
With a remarkable IMDb rating of 8.3, Laaptaa Ladies proves that compelling stories can triumph over star-studded extravaganzas. It remains available on Netflix for viewers who have yet to experience this cinematic gem.
