At the launch event of ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ Season 5, former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu called for Padma Shri recognition for Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Krishna Abhishek, and Kiku Sharda, emphasizing that making people laugh is no easy feat.
The fourth season of the show is currently streaming on Netflix, featuring celebrity appearances like A.R. Rahman and Rani Mukerji. The launch event of Season 5 brought together Sidhu, Archana Puran Singh, Kapil Sharma, Krishna Abhishek, Sunil Grover, and Kiku Sharda. Known for his signature sher-o-shayari (poetic expressions) on the show, Sidhu declared that he will not die until these performers receive the Padma Shri award.
A video from the launch event has gone viral, showing Sidhu saying:
“I will wait for that day, and I will not die before it comes. When any of these heroes are honored with the Padma Shri, I will be satisfied. I say this because they truly deserve this recognition. Their work is discussed all over India. Making someone smile costs nothing but is worth millions of dollars.”
On Kapil-Sunil Disagreements:
Sidhu also addressed the occasional on-set spats, saying:
“I have seen politics, cricket, and life, but now it’s time to see them dominate a comedy show for 25 years. This bouquet of talent—sometimes they quarrel even on an airplane. But if they can remain grounded, they can reach for the stars with their dreams.”
Season 5 Banter:
When Kapil asked Sidhu about the upcoming Season 5 while Season 4 is still streaming, Sidhu humorously replied:
“If Netflix continues to pay on time, this season will not be 5 but 50 episodes!”
The remark drew laughter from everyone present.
Sidhu Returns to the Show After Six Years:
Navjot Singh Sidhu made a comeback to Kapil Sharma’s show after six years. He had last appeared in Season 3 but had left the show in 2019 due to political commitments, with Archana Puran Singh taking his place. Netflix accommodated both, allowing Sidhu to return while Archana continued on the show.
Cast Fees:
- Kapil Sharma – ₹5 crore per episode
- Sunil Grover – ₹25 lakh
- Krishna Abhishek – ₹10 lakh
- Archana Puran Singh – ₹10-12 lakh
- Kiku Sharda – ₹6 lakh
- Navjot Singh Sidhu – ₹30-40 lakh per episode
Sidhu’s passionate plea for Padma Shri recognition highlights the cultural impact of comedy artists and their decades-long contribution to Indian entertainment.
