Mumbai Court Asked to Stay Release of Shahid Kapoor-Starrer ‘O’ Romeo’ Over Biopic Claim

Mumbai | February 2: The daughter of late gangster Hussain Ustara has approached a Mumbai civil court seeking a permanent injunction against the release of the upcoming Hindi film O’ Romeo, alleging that the movie is an unauthorized biopic that falsely depicts her father’s life.

Sanober Shaikh, daughter of Hussain Shaikh—popularly known as Hussain Ustara—filed a civil suit on Monday against the film’s producer Sajid Nadiadwala, director Vishal Bhardwaj, and journalist-author Hussain Zaidi. The court is scheduled to hear the matter on February 6.

In her plea, Shaikh contended that the film unlawfully exploits her late father’s identity and reputation without obtaining consent from the family, and presents a distorted version of his life and legacy.

O’ Romeo, an action thriller featuring Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor in the role of Ustara, is reportedly inspired by Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The film is slated for theatrical release on February 13.

The lawsuit adds a fresh layer of uncertainty to the film’s release, just days ahead of its scheduled debut, and brings renewed focus on legal disputes surrounding cinematic portrayals of real-life figures.
