Mumbai: The tragic death of Maharashtra Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on the morning of 28 January has left the nation in shock. Pawar, 66, was traveling from Mumbai to Baramati to address four rallies for the district council elections when his chartered plane skidded off the runway during landing, killing all five on board. His last rites are scheduled for 29 January at 11 AM.
However, Pawar’s unfortunate demise is not the first instance of a celebrity losing their life in an aviation accident. Several stars have met similar fates in the past, reopening old wounds for the film industry and their fans.
1. Soundarya Sharma
The first on the list is actress Soundarya, famous for her role in Sooryavansham. On 17 April 2004, 32-year-old Soundarya was traveling from Bangalore’s Jakkur Airfield to Karimnagar when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff and caught fire. Tragically, Soundarya, who was seven months pregnant at the time, lost her life along with her brother Amar Nath, BJP worker Ramesh Kadam, and pilot Joy Phillips.
2. Omkar
Actor Omkar, known for playing Chander’s elder brother in the hit film Nadiya Ke Paar, also died in a plane crash. He was traveling to London with his wife and children when the accident occurred.
3. Taruni Sachdev
Child actress Taruni Sachdev, recognized for her role in Rasna Girl and acting alongside Amitabh Bachchan in Paa, died on 14 May 2012 near Jomsom Airport in Nepal. Taruni, then 14, was traveling with her mother on her birthday when the plane crashed, killing both mother and daughter.
Ajit Pawar’s death serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel, a tragedy that has previously claimed talented lives in the film industry as well.
