Comedian and actor Kapil Sharma stirred headlines during the Netflix event announcing The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 5. Known for his quick wit, Kapil made a playful remark about gangster Lawrence Bishnoi while on stage, only to immediately ask the team to “remove it”—forgetting that the event was being live-streamed.
The Moment on Stage
The announcement came at the Next On Netflix 2026 event in Mumbai, which showcased upcoming shows and films on the OTT platform. Kapil, joined by Netflix India CEO Monika Shergil, interacted with the audience in his trademark mischievous style. During the conversation, Monika referenced the popular dialogue from the Bollywood franchise Don, saying, “Our eyes, India’s eyes, have been on you for a long time, Kapil. Hopefully, not the eyes of the police from 11 countries!”
Seizing the moment, Kapil quipped, “Even gangsters from one or two countries are keeping an eye these days,” a direct reference to Lawrence Bishnoi. Bishnoi’s associates—Goldy Brar, Dhillon, and Babbar Khalsa International’s Harjeet Singh Laddi—had taken responsibility for three recent attacks at Kapil’s restaurant, Caps Café, in Canada over four months. Though no one was injured, the incidents caused considerable concern.
Realizing It Was Live
After making the joke, Kapil asked the media to remove the mention of Bishnoi, only to realize the event was being broadcast live. This wasn’t the first time Kapil referenced the attacks publicly; at the Kis Kis Ko Pyar Karoon 2 trailer launch in November, he had shared that the case reached the Canadian Parliament and even the federal government, adding humorously that the number of visitors to his café actually increased afterward.
Show Ratings Under Pressure
The Great Indian Kapil Show, featuring stars like Archana Puran Singh, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sunil Grover, Krishna Abhishek, and Kiku Sharda, has been facing declining ratings. Recent reports indicate a 47% drop in viewership compared to Season 1, with the show falling off Netflix’s global rankings. Season 4’s second episode recorded 1.7 million views and 3.9 million hours watched worldwide, placing it eighth globally, whereas previous seasons consistently appeared in the top global list during the initial episodes.
