Javed Akhtar Takes a Dig at Use of Obscene Language in Comedy; Zakir Khan Responds

Renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has sparked a fresh debate on the evolving nature of stand-up comedy by criticising the increasing use of abusive and obscene language in comic performances. His remarks have now drawn a measured response from popular comedian Zakir Khan, highlighting differing perspectives within the creative community.

In recent weeks, several stand-up comedians have come under scrutiny after controversial clips from their shows went viral on social media, leading to public backlash and apologies. Against this backdrop, Javed Akhtar, speaking at a public event, likened the use of foul language in comedy to adding excessive spice to bland food.

Akhtar remarked that abusive words are often used as a substitute for substance, saying that when a conversation lacks depth or wit, people resort to profanity to make it impactful. Drawing a socio-cultural analogy, he said that in regions marked by poverty—whether in India or elsewhere in the world—people tend to consume more spicy food because the meal itself lacks richness. “Abuse,” he noted, “is merely the chilli of language. If you are articulate, sharp, and thoughtful, you don’t need it.”

Responding to these comments at an Indian Express event, Zakir Khan expressed deep respect for Javed Akhtar and acknowledged the validity of his observations from a literary and cultural standpoint. However, he also underlined the importance of artistic freedom.

“I admire Javed Akhtar immensely and value his contribution to language and culture,” Zakir Khan said. “His comments about comic artists are not wrong. But that does not mean they must be imposed on everyone. Language evolves with people. If someone uses abusive words, you cannot forcibly stop them. As artists grow, they learn, refine themselves, and sometimes move away from certain expressions—but no one has the right to point fingers.”

The exchange has reignited a broader conversation about creative expression, censorship, and responsibility in comedy, reflecting the ongoing tension between artistic freedom and cultural sensitivity in India’s rapidly expanding entertainment landscape.
