Actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, recently spoke candidly in an interview about his divorce, mental health struggles, and life as a single parent. After an extended break from acting, Imran made a cameo in the film Happy Patel, but his personal life has remained in the public eye.
Reflecting on his past, Imran revealed that the last few years of his marriage were extremely challenging. “Staying in an unhealthy relationship was more harmful than separating,” he said. The actor emphasized that his decision to divorce was a step toward self-healing, not a result of his mental health issues.
Single Parenthood and Dedication to Daughter
For the past seven years, Imran has been a single parent to his daughter Imara. He has never hired a nanny or staff, preferring to personally handle her care. He wakes her up, packs her lunch, drops her at school, and spends as much quality time with her as possible. Imara stays with him from Thursday to Sunday, and he treasures every moment. “I want to be there for her as much as I can. That time with her is precious to me,” he said.
Journey with Mental Health
Imran revealed that his struggles began around 2016, when he first sensed that something was wrong with his mental state. “I felt different from the person I thought I was. Internally, I was broken, even if outwardly I appeared calm,” he explained. During this period, he realized that his marriage had become unhealthy, and despite their early bond, both he and his then-wife, Avantika Malik, lacked the experience to navigate the relationship effectively.
About the Divorce
Imran and Avantika, childhood friends, married in 2011 and divorced in 2019. He credits their separation with giving him a chance to recover and grow, saying, “No matter how painful, leaving an unhealthy environment was better than staying.” Avantika, in her own interviews, described the divorce as the worst period of her life, revealing the deep emotional toll it took on her.
Today, Imran is mentally fit and openly discusses his journey to inspire awareness about mental health and the realities of single parenting.
