“I Tortured Myself”: Arijit Singh Opens Up About Struggles, Royalties, and Retirement from Playback Singing

Bollywood playback singer Arijit Singh recently opened up about the struggles behind his glittering career, revealing the extreme measures he took to refine his voice and the concerns that influenced his decision to retire from playback singing.

On 27 January, Arijit announced his retirement, leaving fans shocked. In a private social media post, he explained that his decision was planned long ago and motivated by a desire to explore music production and filmmaking, while continuing to create music. His first Hindi film as a producer is currently being shot, featuring his son as the lead and Shora Siddiqui, daughter of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, as the heroine.

The Struggle Behind the Voice
Arijit revealed that in the early years, people disliked his original voice. To meet audience expectations, he tortured and reshaped his voice, experimenting with vocal textures to develop the projection and tonal quality that fans now love. He described the process as physically and emotionally grueling but necessary to achieve his signature sound.

Royalty Concerns
Arijit also spoke about royalties, highlighting their importance for singers’ financial security. According to a 2024 Spotify report, Indian singers’ royalties increased by 6% in 2023, and Arijit remains the most-streamed Indian artist annually. With over 15 billion streams in the last year, even a small fraction per play could earn him around ₹75 crore annually, ensuring financial stability post-retirement.

Career Highlights
Arijit began his journey in 2005 with the reality show Fame Gurukul, made his Bollywood singing debut in 2011, and rose to fame with “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 (2013). He delivered numerous hits, including “Man Mast Magan”, “Tose Naina”, “Binte Dil”, and “Kesariya”, along with patriotic tracks like “Matrubhumi” from Battle of Galwan. Over his career, he has won 2 National Awards, 8 Filmfare Awards, and was honored with the Padma Shri in 2025.
