Veteran Marathi and Bollywood actor Shriram Lagoo, remembered for his powerful performances in films like Gandhi, Vidhaata, Lawaris, Mukaddar Ka Sikandar, and Kinara, once held a medical degree and practiced as an ENT surgeon. However, decades ago, his medical license was revoked following a controversy over a Chyawanprash advertisement.
From Medicine to the Stage
Shriram Lagoo earned his MBBS degree from BJ Medical College and began his medical practice in the 1960s, working as an ENT surgeon in Pune and Tanzania. During his first year in medical college, he was introduced to theatre, which soon became his passion. Balancing both professions for a time, Lagoo eventually devoted himself fully to acting while maintaining his medical practice.
The Controversial Advertisement
In the 1980s, Lagoo appeared in a Dabur Chyawanprash advertisement, sparking controversy. Critics argued that as a doctor, endorsing a commercial product for money posed a moral conflict. The Indian Medical Council (IMC) subsequently revoked his medical license, barring him from practicing medicine.
A Surgeon Once, Now a Legendary Actor
Years later, in an interview with Tabassum, Lagoo reflected on his medical career, stating, “I am not a doctor anymore. I was once an ENT surgeon.” He did not offer further justification for the incident but candidly acknowledged his past in medicine.
Acting: From Theatre to Films
Lagoo’s acting journey began in Marathi theatre, where he earned recognition as one of the stalwarts of the stage. Later, he transitioned to films while continuing to perform in theatre productions. His iconic screen presence made him a respected figure in both Marathi and Hindi cinema.
Legacy and Passing
Shriram Lagoo continued to act in films and theatre well into his later years. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 92, battling Parkinson’s disease, leaving behind a rich legacy of performances that continue to inspire generations.
