Mumbai: Actor Vishal Jethwa, known for his role in the film Homebound, recently shared emotional insights into his challenging childhood and the struggles his family faced. Vishal revealed that his early years were far from ordinary. After losing his father at a young age, his mother, Preeti Jethwa, had to work as a domestic helper in multiple households to support the family.
Vishal Jethwa is currently in the spotlight for Homebound, India’s official entry to the Oscars. Though the film did not make the final nominations, it received widespread acclaim, particularly for Vishal’s performance alongside Ishaan Khatter. Earlier, Vishal had gained attention for his role as a formidable villain in Mardani 2 starring Rani Mukerji, but Homebound has elevated him to international recognition.
A Childhood Marked by Struggle
In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Vishal described his upbringing: “I come from a lower-middle-class, or rather, a very poor family. I consider myself fortunate because it helped me grow as an actor and as a person. I closely witnessed my parents’ lives and their struggles.”
Vishal lost his father at a young age and saw firsthand how his mother single-handedly raised the family. “She worked tirelessly to provide for us. I experienced financial hardship, and my childhood was very different from that of other children. Yet, all of it shaped me into the actor I am today,” he said.
Early Career as a Background Dancer
Vishal shared that he studied at a Gujarati medium school in Malad before moving to Mira Road and later attending Thakur College in Kandivali. At the age of 14, he began working as a background dancer on shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs. He even performed alongside Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin during the promotions of the film London Dreams. However, he soon realized dancing was not his ultimate passion.
A Son’s Tribute to His Mother
Vishal spoke emotionally about his mother: “My mother worked as a domestic helper in people’s homes, cleaning and taking care of their households. I am very close to her because of the sacrifices she made. Whenever I reflect on my journey and achievements, she is always the first person I think of. Her struggles and sacrifices shaped my life. Her childhood was extremely difficult, and compared to hers, mine was somewhat better. She made sure I never felt the absence of anything.”
Family Background and TV Career
Vishal hails from a Gujarati family; his father, Naresh, sold coconuts, and Vishal helped pack them. He began his acting career in 2013 with the TV show Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap and appeared in several other shows, including Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman, Chakradhari Ajay Krishna, Thapki Pyar Ki, and Diya Aur Baati Hum.
Film Career
Vishal transitioned to films in 2014, starting with a small role in Darr @ the Mall, followed by a cameo as a tea seller in Hindi Medium. His career breakthrough came with Mardani 2 in 2019, and now Homebound has brought him international recognition.
Vishal Jethwa’s journey from a challenging childhood to global acclaim is a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of a mother who sacrificed everything for her children.
