Mumbai, January 10:
Bollywood’s most successful producer and businessman, Ronnie Screwvala, has once again made headlines—this time for his staggering net worth of ₹13,314 crore, surpassing even superstar Shahrukh Khan. From humble beginnings as a cable operator to building a media and entertainment empire, Screwvala’s journey is a remarkable story of perseverance and vision.
Born in 1956 into a Parsi family, Ronnie Screwvala started his career at a young age. By 25, he had already launched his own cable company, long before the proliferation of television channels in India, when Doordarshan was the only broadcaster. Starting with just 30 households, he expanded his network to hundreds of housing societies and hotels across Mumbai.
Screwvala didn’t stop there—he also started a toothbrush manufacturing company, eventually becoming the largest supplier for Colgate in India. His entrepreneurial ventures extended to social causes as well, founding the Swades Foundation, which works for rural development and modern technology adoption in villages.
Struggles in Bollywood
Despite his business success, Ronnie’s foray into films was challenging. His first five films were commercial failures, including movies starring Shahrukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar. In one memorable instance, he recalled a scene in which a cobra had to drink milk during a shoot. The director had joked that the film would be a superhit if the cobra drank the milk—but unfortunately, it became one of his biggest flops.
Undeterred, Screwvala shifted focus to smaller, innovative projects. He backed films like “D”, “Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh”, and “Rang De Basanti”, which went on to become hits. He then launched UTV Movies and later RSVP Movies, producing successful films such as “Lust Stories”, “Uri: The Surgical Strike”, “Raat Akeli Hai”, and “Sam Bahadur”, establishing himself as one of Bollywood’s leading producers.
Recognition and Rich List
According to the Hurun India Rich List 2025, Ronnie Screwvala tops the list of richest Bollywood producers, with a net worth of ₹13,314 crore, surpassing Shahrukh Khan’s ₹12,490 crore. His journey from a cable operator to a media mogul, philanthropist, and influential film producer showcases the power of vision, resilience, and relentless hard work.
Ronnie Screwvala continues to be a towering figure in India’s entertainment and business sectors, proving that even repeated failures can pave the way to monumental success.
