Veteran actress Neena Gupta, currently promoting her upcoming film Vadh 2, recently shared an interesting anecdote from her long and illustrious career. She revealed that she once received a scolding from the legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal on set—a moment that left a lasting impression on her.
The Power of Silence on Screen
During an interview with IANS, Neena spoke about the importance of dialogue and silence in acting. On being asked whether delivering a performance without dialogue offers the ultimate freedom to an actor, she said, “I don’t see it as freedom or a burden. For me, it is part of the character and the work. How a scene unfolds depends on the director’s vision, and as an actor, one must trust that vision.”
Neena gave an example from Vadh 2, describing a scene where she walks down a corridor for an extended sequence. “Initially, I wondered why I had to walk for so long, but later I understood that every frame has a purpose. The audience may not immediately grasp it, but the impact of the scene on the story is significant. Sometimes, a character can say a lot without speaking at all.”
A Lesson from Shyam Benegal
Recalling a specific incident, Neena said, “Once I suggested delivering a line in my own way, and Shyam Benegal replied very clearly, ‘Go sit quietly and focus on your role.’ At that time, actors respected the director’s vision and rarely argued, unlike today when debates are common—sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly.”
Advice for Fellow Actors
Neena emphasized that actors should trust the director’s larger vision. “An actor thinks about their role, but the director sees the whole film—the start, the end, and the meaning of every scene. Therefore, an actor must trust the director and perform accordingly.”
Vadh 2 is scheduled for release in theaters on 6 February 2026.
