A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against veteran Bollywood singer Udit Narayan following a complaint by his first wife, Ranjana Narayan. She has accused the singer, his brothers—Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalit Narayan Jha—and his second wife, Deepa Narayan, of allegedly forcing her to undergo a hysterectomy without her consent.
Complaint Filed at Women’s Police Station
Ranjana, accompanied by her lawyer Karunakant Jha, lodged the complaint at a women’s police station on Tuesday, 10 February. She told authorities that she hails from Supaul district and is the daughter of Chandrakant Jha. According to her, she married Udit Narayan on 7 December 1984 in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Soon after, Narayan moved to Mumbai to pursue his singing career, during which Ranjana claims he married Deepa without divorcing her.
Allegations Against Udit Narayan’s Family
Ranjana alleged that in 1996, Udit Narayan, along with his brothers, took her to a hospital in Delhi where her uterus was removed without her knowledge. She claims that Deepa was present at the hospital, but no one informed her about the procedure. In 2006, when she visited Mumbai, she alleged that Udit Narayan and Deepa verbally abused her and refused her entry into their home. She later went to her in-laws’ residence in Nepal but claims she was expelled from there as well, and has since been living at her parental home.
Legal Proceedings and Previous Complaints
Ranjana stated that she has already filed a case against Udit Narayan in the Supaul Family Court, which is yet to be heard. She also approached the Women’s Commission, after which Udit Narayan acknowledged her as his wife and promised to support her. However, she claims she has not received the respect or financial support she was entitled to and continues to face economic difficulties.
Authorities noted that the complaint relates to events from over 30 years ago. They stated that they would first review the old case records and then proceed with registering an FIR based on the findings.
No Settlement Reached Between Udit Narayan and Ranjana
In February 2025, Udit Narayan appeared in the Supaul Family Court and refused to settle with Ranjana, stating he intended to fight the case. In written submissions, he alleged that Ranjana’s claims were an attempt to extort money from him and that she had not presented the facts truthfully in court.
Support and Property Provided to Ranjana
The Women’s Commission found that Udit Narayan had been paying Ranjana ₹15,000 per month, which was later increased to ₹25,000 in 2021. Additionally, he reportedly provided her a property worth ₹1 crore along with agricultural land. Ranjana has rented one room of the property for ₹6,000 per month. Despite these provisions, she wishes to live with her husband, which he has refused.
Udit Narayan’s Second Marriage and Family
Udit Narayan reportedly married Deepa Gehtoraj, who had come to Mumbai to try her luck in Bollywood, without divorcing Ranjana. The couple later welcomed a son, Aditya Narayan, in 1987, who has also become a well-known singer today.
